Women’s Health and Immunity Across Lifespan
Tuesday, July 7 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm (Pacific)
Nadia Roan investigates how viruses persist and cause chronic disease in people. A major focus of her lab is understanding how HIV persists in a reservoir in the face of antiretroviral therapy, and how rare individuals can naturally control HIV replication in the absence of antiretroviral therapy. She also studies how SARS-CoV-2 infection can cause Long COVID, and the impact of SARS-CoV-2 immunity on disease manifestation. Finally, the Roan Lab investigates the role of immune cells in female fertility and infertility, and more broadly in women’s reproductive aging and health. Roan’s work provides important clues for developing cures against HIV/AIDS, management and treatment of Long COVID and other post-acute infection syndromes, and supporting women’s health.
This program has been organized by IWF NorCal member Ann Blackburn as part of the IWF NorCal Women's Health series.
Date: Tuesday, July 7th
Time: 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm (Pacific)
Location: via Zoom (Zoom details will be provided in the Event Registration confirmation email).
Cost: Free but registration is required. Open to all IWF Members and IWF Fellows.
Speaker Bio: Nadia Roan is a senior investigator at Gladstone Institutes and a professor or urology at UC San Francisco (UCSF). She received her undergraduate training from UC Berkeley and completed her doctorate in the biological and biomedical sciences program at Harvard Medical School studying T cell responses to the sexually transmitted bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. She conducted her postdoctoral studies at Gladstone Institutes, where she studied the mechanisms by which mucosal factors influence HIV infection. The current focus of her lab is to understand how persistent viruses including HIV cause human disease, and the impact of viral-specific immunity on the course of disease.
